Cloud Server

Get started

What is a cloud server and how does it work?

A cloud server is a virtual server (rather than a physical server) running in a cloud computing environment. It is built, hosted and delivered via a cloud computing platform via the internet, and can be accessed remotely. They are also known as virtual servers. Cloud servers have all the software they require to run and can function as independent units.

In some respects cloud servers work in the same way as physical servers but the functions they provide can be very different. When opting for cloud hosting, clients are renting virtual server space rather than renting or purchasing physical servers. These are often paid for by the hour, depending on the capacity required at any particular time.

Our award-winning platform, Virtual Data Centre (VDC), is unique. It provides public cloud IaaS but with dedicated network free-of-charge, making it private by design. To find out more, visit our Cloud marketplace, CloudStore, or sign up for a free trial today.

Shared Hosting

Shared Hosting

  • The cheaper option, as servers are shared between the hosting provider's clients (e.g. one client's website will be hosted on the same server as those of other clients)
  • Suitable for small enterprises, where the required capacity is relatively low
  • Setup is inflexible and cannot cope with a large amount of traffic
Dedicated Hosting

Dedicated Hosting

  • A much more advanced form of hosting, whereby clients purchase whole physical servers
  • The entire server is dedicated to one client, with no one else sharing it
  • In some instances, a client may utilise multiple servers which are all dedicated to their use
  • Allows for full control over hosting
Cloud Hosting

Cloud Hosting

  • Clients get the best of both worlds: resource can be scaled up or scaled down accordingly, making it more flexible and, therefore, more cost-effective
  • When there is more demand placed on the servers, capacity can be automatically increased to match demand without needing to be paid for on a permanent basis
  • Cloud servers can run on a hypervisor. The role of a hypervisor is to control the capacity of operating systems so it is allocated where needed

Considerations for Cloud Servers

Virtual Server

Virtual servers vs. physical servers

Physical (bare metal) servers are best for data-intensive workloads. Virtual servers are better for highly variable workloads

Cloud servers can be physical or virtual. Virtualization software options include VMware,Parallels and Hyper-V.

Physical servers have numerous customization options, such as more processing power, additional RAM and backup power.

Security options for cloud servers include firewalls, anti-virus software, monitoring and host intrusion protection.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

A VDS or Virtual Dedicated Server from GlowHost is a an array of many hardware devices that, with special software, can offer equivalent or higher performance to a standard VPS or even dedicated server. In fact, with our virtualization technology you could combine all resources in the cloud to make one monster server. Imagine a machine with several hundred gigs of RAM, thousands of terabytes of storage, and a hundred or so CPUs, all with multiple cores. This is what virtualization can do. We take this monster machine and split it into smaller pieces called Virtual Machines. What makes GlowHost cloud servers and VDS so special in comparison to a VPS, VDS or semi-dedicated server from other providers, is that it is fully redundant at every level. Our VDS can sustain multiple hard drive failures, multiple server failures, network failures and something that almost no one else can offer, electrical failures. Our cloud is powered by 2 different electric grids that service the facility, so if one grid goes down due to lightning, or just from Uncle Joe digging holes in the yard where he isn’t supposed to be, we have you covered. If both grids are down due to some catastrophic event, we have dual diesel fuel generators on site with enough fuel to power them until the grid comes back online. Similar to VPS, each Virtual Machine runs completely independent of the other, with the added benefit of its own private VLAN. There is a firewall on the network that prevents packets from being discovered that belong to other virtual machines. To the end user, or server administrator, the virtual machine appears and acts just like a traditional VPS or dedicated server, but with the HA (High Availability) features and infrastructure that other hosts only dream of being able to offer or are still scrambling to invent. Each Virtual Dedicated Server or Virtual Machine has its own private CPU, RAM, bandwidth and disk space limits which can be upgraded or downgraded in minutes or seconds.

Sure! We encourage it actually. If you need more of “this,” or more of “that,” no problem. Customize it, upgrade it, downgrade it, do what you want with it until your heart is content.

For Cloud VDS we offer the latest CentOS. However if you prefer an unmanaged VDS, you can choose any OS that you want. For Enterprise Cloud, we offer over 100 different operating system variants and the number grows by the day. We offer all the most popular Linux and Windows systems. If you need it, we probably have it. If we don’t have it, we will put it on the request list for you and let you know when it becomes available.
